Dr. Britany J. Gatewood

Senior Research Coordinator She/Her

Dr. Britany J. Gatewood is the Senior Research Coordinator at Beloved Community. Although she did not know it, she grew up with a research question she was always trying to find the answer to, “why do people treat each other differently based on their identities?” It was this question that inspired her future and current research.

Dr. Gatewood earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Howard University. Her research focuses on social movements and the effects of carceral institutions on the Black community. In recent years an additional question has motivated her work, “how can I use what I know to help the community?” This question has led her to organize collective actions and community events, and create organizations that center the community and their needs.

These two lifelong research questions have led her to Beloved Community. Dr. Gatewood currently lives in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area where she resides with her partner and her couch potato dog, Burrito. When she is not working, she loves to read Afrofuturistic novels, travelling to new places, and cooking lavish meals for her friends.
